Can you pass the A&P General written? Ten questions from the FAA handbooks.

The Aviation Mechanic General knowledge test is the first of the three written tests on the way to an FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate — General, then Airframe, then Powerplant. It is 60 multiple-choice questions with a two-hour limit, and you need 42 correct to pass: the 70% mark is not a convention but a regulation, fixed by 14 CFR 65.17. You sit it at an FAA-approved testing centre, and the result is good for 24 calendar months, which is the window you have to finish the oral and practical.

The General test covers the twelve subjects in the FAA's Aviation Mechanic General Airman Certification Standards: electricity and electronics, ground operations and servicing, aircraft drawings, weight and balance, fluid lines and fittings, materials and hardware and processes, cleaning and corrosion control, mathematics, regulations and maintenance records, physics for aviation, inspection concepts, and human factors. Electricity and ground operations carry the most weight, and the maths — Ohm's law, ratios, areas, the weight-and-balance arm — is where most people quietly lose the points they needed.
